How we work

Editorial Policy and Corrections

What we publish, who is responsible for it, how it is checked, and what happens when we get something wrong.

Who is responsible

The Woven Garden is run by Bertha, who decides what the site covers and is responsible for everything published on it. Calculators carry the line “Built and reviewed by Bertha”, and guides “Written and checked by Bertha”, with the date of the last update.

The site is written from the point of view of a home gardener for other home gardeners. It does not offer professional engineering, construction or horticultural advice, and it says so wherever that matters.

What we publish

We publish three kinds of page.

  • Calculators, which turn measurements into quantities of material.
  • Guides, each of which explains one decision: how to measure, how deep, how far apart, how much extra, which way to buy.
  • Reference pages, which hold the tables, conversions and definitions the rest of the site relies on.

We choose topics by one test: is there a number a gardener needs before starting, that is easy to get wrong? If so, it belongs here. We do not publish news, product reviews, “best of” lists or anything written mainly to attract search traffic.

Standards for every page

  • Original. Pages are written for this site. We do not copy or reword other sites’ articles, and we do not reproduce manufacturers’ tables.
  • Shown working. Any figure a reader might act on comes with the formula or reasoning that produced it.
  • Honest about uncertainty. Where a value varies between products or regions, we give a range and say what to check. We do not present a typical value as a fact.
  • Plain language. If a term of the trade is needed, it is explained where it is first used and in the glossary.
  • No invented experience. We do not claim tests we have not run, credentials we do not hold, or results we have not seen. Worked examples are arithmetic on stated measurements, and example prices are labeled as examples.
  • Complete. A page is published when it answers its question fully. We do not publish placeholders or stubs.

How pages are checked

Every calculator is tested against two hand-worked examples before publication, in both unit systems, and every figure quoted in its text must match what the calculator produces. Guides are read through against the calculators they refer to. The full procedure is on the methodology page.

Pages are reviewed on a schedule. Assumption tables are checked every three months, and each page shows the date of its last update.

Our use of software and AI tools

We use software, including AI tools, to help draft text, prepare diagrams and write calculator code. We think readers are entitled to know that.

These tools are assistants, not authors of record. Nothing they produce is published until it has been checked: formulas against the code, worked examples against the calculator, and advice against the sources described in the methodology. Responsibility for what appears on the site rests with the person who runs it, not with a tool.

Diagrams on the site are drawn for it. Where a photograph or illustration has been generated or edited with AI tools, it is used for illustration only and is not presented as evidence of a real project or test.

Advertising and independence

The site is funded by advertising, served by Google AdSense. Advertisements are labeled, are kept visually separate from our own content, and are never placed inside or beside calculator controls.

  • Advertisers do not see, approve or influence what we publish.
  • We do not accept payment for coverage, links or recommendations.
  • We do not publish sponsored articles or guest posts.
  • We do not recommend specific brands or retailers. Where a product type is mentioned, such as “fast-setting concrete mix”, it is the type that is meant, not a brand.

Our approach to affiliate links is set out in the affiliate disclosure.

Corrections

We get things wrong sometimes. When we do, we fix it quickly and say so.

  • Report an error by email to contact@thewovengarden.com or through the contact page. A link to your calculator result, or the page and sentence in question, helps us find it.
  • We check every report against the formula, the code and our sources.
  • Confirmed errors are corrected as soon as they are verified, and the page’s “last updated” date changes.
  • Substantive corrections are logged below, with the date and a description of what changed. A substantive correction is one that changes a result, a recommendation or a stated fact. Typing and wording fixes are not logged.
  • We do not quietly remove mistakes. If a calculator gave wrong results for a period, the log says so, so that anyone who used it can check their order.
