Disclaimer
The calculators and guides on this site give estimates for general information. Please read this page before you rely on them for a purchase or a build.
Estimates only
Every result on this site is an estimate. It is produced from the measurements you enter, a formula, and typical values for materials. Real projects differ from the estimate for reasons no calculator can see:
- your measurements may be a little out
- the ground is rarely as flat or as regular as the shape you entered
- products vary, so a bag, a block, a board or a seed blend may not match the typical value assumed
- suppliers sell in their own units and increments
- materials settle, compact, break and get wasted at different rates on different jobs
Use the results to plan and to order sensibly. Check the label or specification of the product you are actually buying, and confirm quantities with your supplier for any large or expensive order.
We do not guarantee that any result is accurate, complete or suitable for your project.
Not professional advice
The site is written by a home gardener for general information. It is not engineering, architectural, construction, surveying, legal, horticultural or safety advice, and using it does not create a professional relationship of any kind.
Structural work, permits and safety
Several calculators count materials for things that can cause serious harm if they are built badly: decks, fences, retaining walls, concrete footings and slabs. Those calculators count materials only. They do not check that a design is safe, and they do not replace:
- Your local building code and permit process. Most places require a permit for decks, for retaining walls above a set height, and for many fences and slabs. Requirements for footings, spans, post depth, frost depth, guardrails and setbacks from property lines are set locally.
- A qualified professional. Retaining walls over about 4 feet (1.2 m), walls that support a slope, driveway or building, elevated decks, and anything on soft, wet or sloping ground should be designed or reviewed by an engineer or other licensed professional.
- The manufacturer’s installation instructions, which take priority over any general figure on this site for the product concerned.
If a result on this site conflicts with your building code, a professional’s advice or a manufacturer’s instructions, follow them and not this site.
Before you dig
Buried cables, gas lines and water pipes are commonly found at the depths of fence posts and footings. In the United States, call 811 before digging to have utility lines marked, free of charge. Other countries have similar services. Do not dig until lines have been marked.
Lifting, hauling and tools
Garden materials are heavy. A cubic yard of gravel weighs well over a ton. Check your vehicle’s payload before hauling, secure and cover loads, and lift within your limits. Use tools and equipment according to their makers’ instructions, with appropriate protection for eyes, hands, ears and lungs. You are responsible for your own safety and for the safety of anyone helping you.
Lawn and garden products
Seeding and fertilizer rates on this site are typical values for estimating how much to buy. Always apply products at the rate, and in the manner, stated on the product label. The label is the legal instruction for that product. Some places restrict when and how fertilizer may be applied, particularly products containing phosphorus. Check your local rules.
Prices
The site does not publish prices. Cost comparisons in the calculators use only the prices you enter. Prices that appear in guides are examples chosen to illustrate a method. They are not quotes, and they will differ from prices where you live.
