Rustic Canyon Retreat

Created with raised beds and handmade wooded tuteurs

Rustic Canyon wide shot

This neat and tidy raised bed garden is fortunate enough to overlook Rustic Canyon. Birds and beneficial insects abound leaving pest control to a minimum. The beds are constructed of beautful 8" x 8" cedar. Solid and built to last, these four beds produce a large amount of food for the family. Installed in the early summer of 2007, the soil has developed very well and is a rich dark deep loam.

tomatoesIrrigation is a drip system and each bed has its own on/off valve. Crops are rotated between beds and each summer a large amount of heirloom tomatoes are grow, especially ‘San Marzano Redorta,’ a family favorite.

Four strong handmade wooded tuteurs support the summer crops and fava beans, sweet peas and snow peas in winter. Peppers of all varieties are grown annually with several varieties of onions also.

A large-sized pea gravel is used in the pathways and a French rustic fountain complements this corner of the lush landscape. Fruit trees, salvias and lavender border the garden adding scent, texture and height to the landscape.
